Mercedes Schlapp has no easy work as White House adviser for strategic communication. Mercedes Schlapp is faced with a difficult job as the White House strategic communications adviser. She's dealing with an administration that has a president who is the president's own communications director. Schlapp has remained in the right frame of mind and stay on top of her game, working alongside White House teams in political affairs as well as legislative affairs and policy as well the larger communications team. Her focus has been on issues including school safety the infrastructure and opiates as well as trade. Schlapp hasn't dealt with reporters much in her current role. Her attention in March came when she came up as one of the potential candidates for the job of replacing Hope Hicks. However, throughout it all Schlapp is determined to focus on her task at hand, working closely with the White House's policy and legislative affairs teams and policy shops, as well with the larger communications team to coordinate policy rollouts. So far her main focus has included issues like the safety of schools, trade and the opioid epidemic. Her current work doesn't have much contact with reporters. The issue came up in March when she gained a sudden burst attention, when it became widely known that Schlapp was a potential candidate to take over Hope Hicks's position as the director of communications. The battle has been brutal. Schlapp's allies and Tony Sayegh began to joust in the media. After the Washington Examiner published a negative story about Sayegh, Schlapp stated that she called Sayegh to show a open heart.
